The Liège architect Charles Vandenhove (b. 1927) has designed a new town hall for the municipality of Ridderkerk near Rotterdam. The building is located on an oval square, Koningsplein, the new heart of Ridderkerk. The monumental façade and the impressive front extension present a contrast with the light and open main volume, which combines the public functions of the town hall (wedding room, council chamber, counters) with a meeting centre (with a theatre, a music school and a Grand Café). As always, Vandenhove has enriched the architecture with art: glass walls with motifs borrowed from Gianbattista Piranesi; tapestries after drawings by Botticelli and a design by Luc Tuymans; and decorations created by Léon Wuidar, Jean-Pierre Pincemin and Patrick Corillon. Vandenhove has transformed the entrance hall into an impressive architectural sculpture.
